Getting Concert Ready
A Timeline for Dance Families

Concert season sneaks up fast, here's exactly what to sort and when, so nothing gets left to the last minute.

6 min readCostumes, hair, makeup & backstage kit

Concert season is one of the most exciting times of the dance year, but it can also be the most overwhelming. Between costume fittings, hair trials, rehearsal schedules and last-minute wardrobe malfunctions, it's easy for dance families to feel like they're playing catch-up.

The good news? A little planning goes a long way. We've broken concert prep down into a simple timeline, so you know exactly what to sort at six weeks out, two weeks out, and on the big day itself.

🩰
6–8 Weeks Out
Costumes & Fittings

This is the stage to lock in the essentials, before sizes sell out and alteration queues get long. Confirm your costume order with your studio, then check that shoes, tights and undergarments are all in good condition and the right size. Growing dancers especially should be re-measured rather than relying on last year's fit.

Sort nowBallet, jazz or tap shoes, performance tights, and any dance belts or body stockings needed under sheer costume fabric.
🧵
3–4 Weeks Out
Rehearsal Essentials

As full run-throughs ramp up, this is when small gaps in the dance bag start to show. Make sure warm-up gear is packed for cooler backstage areas, and start a proper emergency kit rather than relying on borrowing from other dance mums.

Sort nowA mini sewing kit, safety pins and fashion tape for quick fixes, plus leg warmers or a warm-up jacket to protect muscles between numbers.
💇♀️
1–2 Weeks Out
Hair & Storage

With the concert date closing in, it's time to trial the hairstyle your teacher has asked for rather than testing it for the first time backstage. Whatever the style, practise it once at home so concert morning is calm rather than chaotic. This is also when costumes should come out of the wardrobe and into proper storage so they arrive crease-free and ready to wear.

Sort nowA hair kit with bun donut or magic bun maker, ripple pins, nets and hairspray, plus a garment bag to protect costumes on the way to the venue.
💄
Final Few Days
Makeup & The Final Check

In the last few days before curtain, run through your studio's makeup requirements and do a full trial face at home, stage lighting washes out colour far more than you'd expect, so it's worth testing rather than guessing on the day. This is also the moment to do one last check of every costume, shoe and accessory against your studio's list.

Sort nowA spill-proof makeup bag with foundation, blush, eyeshadow and lipstick suited to stage lighting, plus a final costume and shoe check against your concert checklist.
🎭
Concert Day
Backstage & Show-Ready

On the day itself, it's all about having everything on hand so quick changes stay quick. Pack a labelled bag for each costume, keep your emergency kit within reach, and don't forget snacks and water, performance days are long and dancers need fuel to keep their energy up between numbers.

Sort nowAn accessories case to keep hair, makeup and repair kits together backstage, plus healthy snacks and a drink bottle for the long haul between call time and curtain call.

"A little planning in the weeks before concert day means less stress in the wings, and more time to enjoy watching your dancer shine."

  1. 6–8 weeks outConfirm costume fit, check shoes and tights, sort undergarments and body stockings.
  2. 3–4 weeks outBuild your emergency kit: sewing kit, safety pins, fashion tape and warm-up layers.
  3. 1–2 weeks outTrial the hairstyle, gather hair kit essentials, and get costumes into garment bags.
  4. Final few daysTrial stage makeup at home and run a full costume and shoe check.
  5. Concert dayPack a labelled bag per costume, keep the emergency kit close, and bring snacks and water.

However many numbers your dancer has on the program, a little preparation makes for a much smoother concert season, for dancers and dance parents alike.
